BIOGRAPHY

Kelechi Alfred is a Nigerian visual artist and painter whose practice explores emotion, motherhood, identity, human expression, and lived experience through the language of figurative abstract and abstraction. Alfred primarily works with acrylic on canvas, sometimes oil and mixed media using pastel, beewax and candle wax to create emotionally charged compositions that combine symbolism, conceptual depth, and personal reflection. A distinctive element within his practice is the repeated use of enlarged heads in his figures. For Alfred, the head functions as a symbolic center of identity, consciousness, thought, memory, and emotional expression. These enlarged forms emphasize the psychological and emotional weight carried by individuals, reflecting internal experiences that are often hidden beneath physical appearance. Through this approach, his figures become vessels of contemplation, vulnerability, and human complexity. His works are deeply influenced by emotions, memories, experiences from childhood, present-day experiences, the surrounding environment, and the impact of psychological and social realities. Through expressive figures, and abstract elements, he examines both personal and collective perceptions of the world. His paintings often invite viewers into moments of reflection, questioning, and emotional connection. Rooted in self and general awareness and observation, Alfred approaches art as both a form of communication and a therapeutic process. Each body of work carries a strong sense of meaning, aiming not only to tell stories but also to create conversations between the artwork and its audience. His artistic style balances figures with abstraction, allowing emotions and concepts to exist beyond literal representation. As an emerging contemporary artist from Nigeria, Kelechi Alfred continues to develop a visual language that speaks to human experiences, emotional vulnerability, symbolism, and the psychological relationship between memory, identity, and perception.
